long term solutions
solutions:
Due to the severity of the emergency in DRC, there are many seemingly small, or obvious changes that could be made to the DRC that will improve its state, long term. The main challenge is creating a unified community dedicated to upholding these said goals and changes.
In order to solve the long standing issues in the DRC, the government needs a renovation. A new president needs to be elected, one who isn’t related to any of the previous ones, or has any special interests. The country is due for an election, but the current president, Joseph Kabila, (Laurent Kabila’s son) is stalling the election. The main focus needs to be lessening the power of the rebel groups. There are too many of them fighting and causing displacement across the country. This being said, war should be avoided at all costs. All of the international aid groups that are interfering with the DRC have been very careful not to incite war between the rebels, and that is vital to not cause more conflict. There needs to be a decrease of gun on the street and in rebel hands because that way, less refugees get caught in the crossfire. Also, the government needs to get rid of all of the representatives and swap them for a more diverse thinking group. None of the current representatives are independent enough to oppose their president, eliminating the point of their checks and balances based government.

Economic
While this is already happening to some extent, tech companies that utilize the conflict minerals need to boycott the minerals that come from rebel run sources. Some major tech companies have done this and in result, positive effects have already been observed. When the rebels learn that their presence at the mines is hurting business, they will leave and when they leave, the people working in the mines will have better conditions. Once the rebels realize they are being watched, they will realize they aren’t outside the law, and might start cleaning up their act. While it is logistically hard to find out which sources are conflict free, it is vital in protecting the human rights of the people working in the mines.
social
There are countless different rebel groups in the DRC, all wanting power. What is necessary is the government and citizens uniting against all these fragmented sources of power, to create one government in charge. This paired with the new president and government officials, will give the country the makeover it needs in order to get on it’s feet again after a century long struggle.
